Viscosupplementation

Viscosupplementation Treatment for Osteoarthritis of the Knee.

Viscosupplementation is the process of injection of hyaluronic acid into the knee joint as a form of treatment for pain associated with osteoarthritis.  Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the knee that acts as a lubricant allowing the knee joint to move smoothly without friction.  It also acts as a shock absorber displacing the load within the knee joint with weight bearing.  When injected into the knee joint, it has been shown to be effective in decreasing pain for up to several months. Euflexxa and Gel-Syn are available options for a series of 3 injection protocol (one injection every week for 3 weeks).  Gel-One and Durolane are forms of the medication that are done as a single procedure.  You and your physician will determine which form is most suitable for you.  The procedure is usually covered by insurance and can be repeated in six month intervals if needed.  Viscosupplementation provides another option for treatment of pain associated with osteoarthritis of the knee other than cortisone injection or anti-inflammatory use (NSAID’s).
