Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA), also called rhizotomy, is a nonsurgical, minimally invasive procedure that uses heat to reduce or stop the transmission of pain. Radiofrequency waves ablate, or “burn,” the nerve that is transmitting pain signals from arthritic joints to the brain. Radiofrequency ablation can provide lasting relief for people with chronic pain related to arthritis in the lower back, neck, and knees. The benefits of radiofrequency ablation include: long lasting pain relief (typically 6 months to 1 year), quick recovery time, decreased need for pain medication, avoidance of surgery, improved function, and improved ability to return to work and other activities.
Radiofrequency ablation is a treatment option for patients who have received excellent temporary pain relief from diagnostic nerve block injections. The radiofrequency ablation procedure is performed with special needles that deliver the radiofrequency current to create a precise “burn” or “lesion” around the tip of the needle. The procedure is performed in the office under fluoroscopic (x-ray) guidance to ensure proper needle placement. After the procedure, patients are monitored in the office for a short period of time, and then cleared to return home.
Our treating physicians are more than happy to answer your questions about the procedure while in the office.
