Viscosupplementation Treatment for
Osteoarthritis of the Knee

KneeViscosupplementation is the process of injection of hyaluronic acid into the knee joint as a form of treatment for pain associated with osteoarthritis.  Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the knee that acts as a lubricant allowing the knee joint to move smoothly without friction.  It also acts as a shock absorber displacing the load within the knee joint with weight bearing.  When injected into the knee joint, it has been shown to be effective in decreasing pain for up to several months.  Synvisc, Euflexxa, and Hyalgan are forms of the medication that require one injection per visit for three consecutive weeks.  Synvisc-One is also available and can be completed in only one visit.  Your physician will determine which form is most suitable for you.  The procedure is usually covered by insurance and can be repeated in six month intervals if needed.  Viscosupplementation provides another option for treatment of pain associated with osteoarthritis of the knee other than cortisone injection or anti-inflammatory use (NSAID’s).
